What If Replacing Human Work Is the Least Imaginative Thing We Could Do With AI?

I keep returning to a question: 

What if replacing human work is one of the least imaginative things we could do with AI?

Not because some work shouldn’t be automated.

It should.

But when a new form of intelligence becomes available, surely the opportunity is greater than transferring yesterday’s work from humans to machines.

What might we now understand that we couldn’t understand before?

What might we create that neither humans nor technology could create alone?

What could people learn, contribute, or become when their value is no longer measured by the work a machine can carry?

Efficiency asks how much human effort we can remove.

Possibility asks what new human capacity we can release. 

Technology doesn't determine that difference. 

It is determined by what we choose to design. 

A design reflection: 

If our AI strategy makes the technology more capable while narrowing what people are able to contribute, have we increased the intelligence of the organization?

Or have we simply shifted where intelligence is allowed to live?
