Excitement vs. Reality: Are You Designing Your Competitive Advantage or Leaving It to Chance?

At SHRM, we asked a simple question:
Where are these decisions actually being handled today?
Hiring. Performance. Strategy. Operations etc.
Most people answered quickly.
Then we asked them to flip the card.
On the other side were a few challenge questions. Nothing complicated. Just enough to make you pause.
And something interesting happened.
Most people changed their answer.
Not because they were wrong. But because they could suddenly see more of the system.
That’s the moment that stuck with me.
Because it raises a bigger question:
Are we intentionally designing how work gets done across people, leadership, and intelligent systems? Or is it evolving on its own?
And if it is evolving, what might we be missing?
